Experience the joy and well-being of coloring mandalas. This 11" x 8.5" PDF Mandala Coloring eBook contains 8 original lighthearted, whimsical asymmetry mandalas by Maureen Frank.

THE DESIGNS:

  • For "Celtic" I wanted to create a more off-beat Celtic knot pattern. It almost looks like a French Horn gone seriously...or rather, sillyously...wrong.
  • The spiral-filled "Curly Q" mandala started as one large spiral in the middle, and the time past, little baby spirals were born.
  • The "Fish" mandala incorporates a very-loose M.C. Escher-like feel of fish traveling horizontally across the design. The vertical lines create the illusion that they swim behind a shear curtain.
  • For "I Dream of Genie" I took my pencil and doodled away on the page with one continuous line. When I finished, I looked to me like a round vase in the upper right quadrant exuding a mist into the ethers. Wanna make a wish?
  • Some dead vegetation in our local park inspired "Jungle". Wisps of delicate branches standing about 2 feet tall with little curved branches at the top. I just had to recreate that magical vision.
  • Ever wonder if "Night Crawlers" curl up in a ball when they go to sleep during the day? This mandala says they do.
  • When one thinks of The Grid, it's assumed that its lines all line up evenly in all directions. In a serious world they do...In a sillyously world they only line up if they feel like it.
  • "Wiggle Room" started out as a bunch of wiggly vertical lines. Adding uneven horizontal lines gave it a small sense of organization. I imagine that this is what my EKG would look like after too much chocolate.

Happy Coloring!

THE PROCESS:

I create my own mandala designs by first hand sketching them with pencil and paper, then using a graphics tablet and stylus, I draw the mandala into the computer. I then convert the digital images into a PDF coloring book.

MY STORY:

I began creating mandalas in early 1999 after a 10-day trip to Egypt. Through much of that region of the world patterns and symbols decorated just about every structure I visited, whether ancient, old or new. My analytical mind loved the geometry of the Islamic art and the Egyptian hieroglyphics. My heart and soul loved their elegant and symbolic beauty.

When I returned home, I began seeing patterns and symbols in everything around me, even in my dreams. I proceeded to translate these intriguing ideas into mandalas. In early 2000 I learned to use meditation as a way to access the depth of these mandalas, fully exploring their therapeutic and metaphysical natures.

In 2007, after 7 years of creating symmetry mandalas, it came to me to start doing asymmetrical mandalas, a more free-flowing style.
