THE DESIGNS

  • After a particularly powerful Hakomi session, the outline of this image came to mind. "Authentic Self" reminds me of a dahlia or chrysanthemum.
  • For "Glory" I combined two different flowers: the trumpet base of a morning glory and the petals of a lily.
  • I love the shape and textures of an "Iris" and it inspired me to create this mandala of 6 irises with their stems joined in the middle...as if they are dancing in a circle.
  • For the "Lilac" mandala I used several different views of the lilac blossom and combined them so that the inside view is in the middle and the side and bud views are around the outside.
  • I used a slightly abstract approach to the "Lotus Wheel" mandala, with a straight-in view of the lotus and shapes around the outer circle to mirror the curves of the lotus petals.
  • I took some personal liberties with the "Primrose" mandala. The common varieties of primroses usually have 4 or 5 petals...this one has 12. Many of my mandalas incorporate the number 12 in them.
  • I created the "Roses" mandala for my mother; she loved her roses along her front yard fence. It reminds both of us to love and accept each other they way we are.
  • I used a single petal structure out of a full hydrangea blossom as my inspiration for "Water Vessel". Most often we recognize the big beautiful ball of the blossom without realizing that it is made up of a multitude of little blossoms which could easily be flowers in their own right.

THE PROCESS

I create my own mandala designs by first hand sketching them with pencil and paper, then using a graphics tablet and stylus, I draw the mandala into the computer. From there I convert them into pdf coloring books.

MY STORY

I began creating mandalas in early 1999 after a 10-day trip to Egypt. Through much of that region of the world patterns and symbols decorated just about every structure I visited, whether ancient, old or new. My analytical mind loved the geometry of the Islamic art and the Egyptian hieroglyphics. My heart and soul loved their elegant and symbolic beauty.

When I returned home, I began seeing patterns and symbols in everything around me, even in my dreams. I proceeded to translate these intriguing ideas into mandalas. In early 2000 I learned to use meditation as a way to access the depth of these mandalas, fully exploring their therapeutic and metaphysical natures.
